Whether you’re a young beginner, an adult trying something new or returning to art after a break, lessons start with what interests you. I welcome children, teenagers and adults, with practical guidance adapted to your age and experience.
You might want to draw your pet, sketch buildings, explore landscapes or learn how to use colour. We’ll choose manageable exercises in drawing, coloured pencil, pen and ink or watercolour to build your skills and confidence.
Your first lesson
We’ll talk about what you’d like to learn and any drawing or painting you’ve done before. I’ll suggest a starting exercise, demonstrate techniques and guide you as you work, with time for questions and experimenting.
You don’t need previous experience or a finished drawing to show me. Curiosity is a good starting point.

Learn with a working artist
I’m Mark Mannering Barton, a professionally trained artist and tutor based in Teddington, with over 30 years’ experience in fine art and commercial design.
My own work includes detailed pet portraits, house drawings and sketches. I bring that practical experience to lessons, breaking techniques into clear steps and demonstrating as we go.
I teach children, teenagers and adults with patience and encouragement. There’s time to ask questions, try different approaches and develop your own way of working.
I am DBS checked.

No. Lessons are suitable for complete beginners as well as those returning to art after many years.

For private tuition, I can advise you on recommended materials. For group classes, a materials list will be provided in advance.

Private sessions typically run for 60-90 minutes to allow focused, uninterrupted learning but on occasions we may want to dedicate more time.
Group sessions will vary depending on course structure.

Yes. Single sessions are available, but many students prefer booking a small block to ensure continuity and steady progress.

Yes. A block of five sessions is available at a reduced rate for those wishing to commit to consistent progress.

Yes. I welcome children, teenagers and adults. Private lessons are adapted to the student’s age, experience and interests. If you’re enquiring for your child, let me know their age and what they enjoy drawing or painting so we can discuss a suitable lesson.
