Ink and Colour Sketch Study

Not everything I do is highly detailed.

I enjoy working on precise, carefully rendered drawings, but it’s just as important to step away from that and sketch more loosely from time to time.

The Value of Loose Sketching

Pieces like this — created in ink and colour — are less about perfection and more about capturing the feel of a subject.

They help develop confidence, improve observation, and encourage a more natural, instinctive approach to drawing.

Instead of focusing on every detail, the emphasis shifts to shape, tone, and overall impression.

Building Confidence Through Simplicity

Working quickly and more freely removes the pressure to get everything “right”.

It allows you to explore, make decisions more instinctively, and develop a stronger sense of composition and balance.

This is a key part of improving as an artist.

A Balanced Approach to Drawing

Detailed work and loose sketching support each other.

The control developed through detailed drawing improves accuracy, while looser work builds confidence and flow.

Together, they create a more complete and adaptable approach to drawing.

Art Lessons for Adults

This is something I often encourage in lessons.

Alongside detailed portrait work, I help students explore looser techniques to build confidence and enjoy the process.

I offer private, one-to-one art lessons for adults in South West London and online.
